How to Make Beef Burger Patties on Pan

Making your own beef patties is very easy and so much healthier than buying the patties pre-made in the store. You can really taste the difference when you make them yourself. If you don't end up using all of the patties at once, you can easily freeze them for later. Freeze each patty between parchment paper and wrap them in foil.

Makes Perfect Grilled Burgers

This recipe really does make outstanding burgers. I discovered a secret that keeps my homemade burgers from ending up as a small meatball. To get large, thin patties, lay the meat on a piece of parchment paper and roll them out super large and thin. Try to aim for about 5 inches in diameter, or even a little larger. Keep them thin. They shrink as they cook.

Using this tip made all the difference. When I tried making patties with just my hands, I always made them too small and they shriveled up to a meatball size. Sliders are delicious, but when you want a large burger you can sink your teeth into, roll out the ground beef on the counter.

Ingredients for the patties:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 3/4 cup chopped onion
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt

How to make a Homemade Beef Burger

Here are the simple steps to an amazing homemade hamburger. I'm sharing step-by-step pictures to help you out as well. If you just want to skip to the recipe, it's right at the bottom.

1.) Saute the Onion

In a frying pan heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion until it becomes translucent.

2.) Combine the beef pattie mixture

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, sautéed onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.

3. Create the patties

Form the beef into 6 fairly thin patties. (About 5 inches in diameter) They will shrink and thicken as they cook.

4.) Grill the burgers

Grill each patty on high heat, about 5 minutes per side.

5.) Make Your Finished Burger

Assemble your burger according to your liking. I like to spread a little mayo and Dijon mustard on each bun, then stack lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles, patty, sautéed mushroom, and Havarti cheese.
